excursion a few kilometers from Jaipur to discover the wonders of the Fort of the ancient capital Amber, whose construction was begun in the 17th century by Maharaja Mansingh, the most successful general of the Mughal emperor Akbar, and which became the seat of power even before the City Palace was completed. An (elephant or a jeep in case of impediments) will lead to the top of the fortified citadel overlooking the Moat Lake and surrounded by bastions. Once at the top, the breathtaking spectacle of the complex of courtyards and frescoed rooms, mirrors, gems, silver, columns, fretwork and the whole atmosphere of a place where history is at home. Of particular charm is the Sheesh Mahal or “hall of mirrors” where a single small torch is enough to illuminate it, which multiplies its light reflected, precisely, in the many mirrors that decorate it. Return to Jaipur and visit the open-air astronomical observatory Jantar Mantar, dating back to 1716 and still functioning, the City Palace, a splendid palace partly used as a museum, the famous “Hawa Mahal” or ‘Palace of the Winds’, a magnificent 5-storey façade inlaid with over 950 windows.
