Today's visits begin with the tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah, the beautiful "marble casket" with delicate floral decorations, a mausoleum built by Empress Nur Jahan in everlasting memory of her father.
Next, the Fort, a triumph of red sandstone for an unrepeatable masterpiece of Mughal architecture.
A vast citadel with extremely refined architectural features, surrounded by the Yamuna River, this monumental fortress amazes with the majesty of its walls, the white marble pavilions, the blue and gold ceilings, the antechambers of the royal bathrooms adorned with mirrors.
Later, at sunset, when the pink rays envelop it in a veil of unreality, visit the astonishing Taj Mahal (closed on Fridays), the mysterious “pearl palace between the gardens and canals” that can be reached on board a decorated rickshaw. Perfect from any angle, white and unreal, graceful and light despite its grandeur, it is a monument to eternal love: it was in fact erected in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died prematurely so that her memory would never be lost and it required 22 years of work, 20,000 men and 1000 elephants to transport the precious materials.
