Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage: An orphanage, nursery and captive breeding site for wild Asian elephants, located in Pinnawala village. 13 km northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala is home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. The orphanage was established to care for and protect the many orphaned wild elephants that are found wandering in the forests of Sri Lanka. It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation. Dambulla: The Golden Cave Temple of Dambulla has been a place of pilgrimage for the last 22 centuries. It is also the largest and best preserved cave temple on the island (there are others). The summit can be reached via stairs built into the mountainside and features the Lion Rock and the remains of the palace and fort. Visitors will be treated to the grandeur of the site when they reach the top, with 360-degree views of the jungle below. The rainwater tanks are still present and in good condition.
